Cyclical is a series of multimedia paintings focused on the American Dream, the history of landscape painting, and the effects “cultural ideals” have on both our environment and our national psyche. The series of landscapes are built on dichotomies: past and present, representation and abstraction, analog and digital, and stability and instability. The paintings in Cyclical push past traditional use of media, manipulating the usually-peripheral mat; from inactive decoration to digitally produced veil that represents the technological precision we surround ourselves with. The symbolism of the mat bears as much meaning as his application of paint, serving both to veil and to delineate his subject matter.
